I recently posted about Ageism - we need to find innovative ways of supporting the workforce.... The buy now, pay later firm Klarna is seeking to get rid of almost half its employees in the coming years through efficiencies it says arise out of its investment in artificial intelligence (AI). The firm has already cut its workforce from 5,000 to 3,800 in the past year, and wants to reduce that to 2,000 employees by using AI in marketing and customer service. Boss Sebastian Siemiatkowski told the BBC the job cuts would mean Klarna could pay its remaining workers more. But he said the government needed to think about what to do about AI, which he predicted would have "a dramatic impact" on jobs and society. "I think politicians already today should consider whether there are other alternatives of how they could support people that may be effective," he told the Today programme, on BBC Radio 4. He said it was "too simplistic" to simply say new jobs would be created in the future. "I mean, maybe you can become an influencer, but it's hard to do so if you are 55-years-old," he said. According to a new BCG report, the fintech market is primed for a “substantial uptick” in IPO activity as investor sentiment around UK startups rebounds after a challenging few years. UK fintech funding decreased by 66% in 2023 to $5.1bn (£4bn), with funding spread across 409 deals, down from 592 deals in 2022.

Women in the UK weren't allowed credit cards until 1974. This means that we went to the moon before we gave women credit cards. Single women couldn't open a bank account or buy a home without their father's involvement until the 1980s. This episode with Simran Kaur really reminded me how precious our financial freedom really is, and how long women were barred from having it. Did you know these stats? Today is the day we head to the polls in the UK to vote for our next leadership team, a team tasked with steering us out of the current economic and cultural decline that has turned our once great Nation into the laughingstock of the World. Even the most dedicated Tory supporters have come to acknowledge the urgent need for change after the tumultuous past 14 years. So, as you cast your vote today, please take a moment to reflect on the core values that our once-great nation was built upon: hard work, innovation, leadership, and collaboration. We have never, and should never, stand for racism, bigotry, misogyny, hatred, fear, or any reduction in our civil liberties. A vote for Reform is exactly this – it’s a vote against our fundamental principles and a vote for a darker future for all. Lest we forget 451,000 British people lost their lives during WW2 to fight against the far right. Don’t let these people die in vain. Don’t let the far right get in through the back door democratically. Let's vote for a leadership that embodies values we can be proud of and can guide us toward a more inclusive and prosperous tomorrow.

The Bank of England governor, Andrew Bailey, reckons there might be as many as FOUR UK #interestrate cuts in 2025. This is according to comments he made to the Financial Times in a video interview. In the same week, new polling from Ipsos finds that 71% of British people expect inflation to rise in 2025. When the central bank and the public have such wildly differing views on the state of things, something has gone quite wrong. Of course, both predictions could well end up being right at the same time...

Is it me or does time just go faster the older you get? 😫 It’s the end of another eventful week and I’m sitting here thinking “How is it Friday already?!” My week:  🎧 I recorded a podcast on CX in travel with Gerry Brown - CCXP, FRSA and Jerry Angrave - A really interesting discussion about disruption, accessibility and empowering the front line coming soon! 📹 Hosted a live webinar with the team at Engage Customer taking an interesting look at security and trust in customer journey. I loved hearing the Glovo story and how Telesign helped them to deliver a secure and trustworthy experience. 🗞 Was interviewed for a piece on Gen AI, discussing the impacts and opportunities in the housing sector and beyond. 😃 Caught up with a couple of old colleagues from way back - funny how you start again just where you left off!? 👊 Had a brilliant conversation with Eman Al-Hillawi who runs Entec Si. She thought I was much younger than I am - “What’s your secret Vinay?” “A wife who is a beautician!” I replied 😁 😳 Had to go and have an emergency chest X-ray for a cough I can’t seem to shift - apparently there this 100 day cough going around, anyone else had that? 🤔 Chewed the fat on training standards for drivers within the SEND sector with the fabulous Jane Saggers 🤝 Met with a leader of a big restaurant group to talk about how I can help turn around the CX in one of their key brands. All sounds great right? Don’t let my LinkedIn give you the impression that it is all sunshine and roses. It is tough out there folks. Starting a business is always challenging and the odds are stacked against you. In this economy it was always going to be hard. But I knew that, don't get me wrong. I’m not complaining and this is by no means a pity post or call for sympathy. So, here we are 9 months into this journey with Dhruva Star I’m still breathing. I’m showing up everyday as the best possible version of myself and trying to give maximum value in every moment possible. So here’s a cheeky toast to that little victory. 18 months ago I took over a team full of self-effacing British people who say things like “bloody hell” and “chuffed to bits”. So I struck back with an all-american tradition of [queue in spirit fingers and tap shoes] 🇺🇸 ✨ice breakers ✨🇺🇸 to kick-off our weekly syncs. As they questioned all the life choices that led them to be stuck in that room week after week, something wonderful happened: we quickly got to know each other beyond how's-the-weather small talk. We made a habit of laughing together and invited vulnerability by divulging personal things. Even when it felt like there was more work than hours in the day, we deliberately made space for the humans behind the co-workers — and soon my team started to chime in with their own ideas. Obviously ice-breakers are not the silver bullet to a high-functioning team. But maybe something behind their ethos is. This surprise arrived in the post today and I can't wait to get stuck in... Frequent leisure flyers - how many - how many flights? The latest Office for National Statistics National Travel Attitudes Study surveyed people in England about how many foreign trips they had taken in the past 12 months. Nearly half of those surveyed had made no such trips while 2% had made over five. While not all foreign trips are undertaken by plane, 91% of those surveyed, who had travelled abroad, had taken a plane. Assuming that the characteristics of those who travel abroad by different modes of transport is the same in terms of frequency of trips we can determine the proportion of flights that are made by frequent leisure flyers. 20% of respondents made just one trip and accounted for 14% of all flights taken. While the 2% who made more than 5 flights accounted for 16% of total leisure flights. Just 9% of the population make 40% of all leisure flights. When asked about the likelihood of future trips abroad, 30% stated they were unlikely to make such a trip over the next 12 months. THE WHOLE SELF (and nothing but the self) I talk a lot about ‘Generation 360’ - a term i coined for Gen Z and the newbies heading into adult life as Gen A through my New Working Class lens. I read a lot about the reported challenges younger generations present to employers, expecting to ‘bring their whole self to work’. Julianna Pillemer has delivered a fascinating paper about ‘strategic authenticity’, investigating a framework of being which balances expressions of one’s inner self with cultural expectations and professional norms of the workplace. Read it in the links below. At 53, my penchant for hats and saying what i see and being curious about how and why others read things differently has been and continues to be both muscle and achilles tendon - my own ‘strategic authenticity’ playing against executive narratives. My mother in particular maintains i am faintly ridiculous for it. Bloody boomers… In truth, my read of the ‘whole self’ thesis is to investigate the role of work in each of our 360 lives. What it brings to us, as much as what we bring to it. That craving for meaning, purpose and agency in line with our values. So that committing so much time and energy to work can anchor our sense of self-worth, way beyond the insecurities of wage and station. Bringing work into our whole self. Is that a young person’s game, or something we are all reflecting on - whether we are honest about it or not? Because unless we can get relational about it, work will continue to be transactional. And of unstable or declining value to each of us. The value of us as humans in being authentic, intuitive and honest about who we are and the energy and experiences we can embody in our work will soon be negated by workflows and other intelligence.
